VIGIL ◆ THE CODEX
BRAND GUIDELINES — VOLUME I
FOR INTERNAL USE OF THE ORDER
MMXXVI

The Codex of the Order — every law of how VIGIL looks, speaks, moves and refuses.

I

The Vibe, Decoded

From the reference wall to three registers.

The references share one temperament: old violence, rendered with modern precision. Armour, seals and woodcuts. They are never nostalgic or cosplay, and always cold, exact and expensive. We distilled them into three registers. Every VIGIL surface speaks in one of them, and never mixes more than two.

Register I — Steel

SABLE GROUND ◆ CHROME RELIEF ◆ HARD STRIP LIGHT

From the chrome shields, the engraved breastplates and the armoured beasts. Embossed metal floating on black. Highlights are knife-edges, never glows. This is the register of the product, the hero and the night.

Register II — Blood

GULES FLOOD ◆ SABLE WOODCUT ◆ CONDENSED PROCLAMATION

From ILCAPO, PRAY and the Folk poster. A flat field of red with black engraving and a towering condensed serif. Reserved for the oath, the drop and the moment of decision. It floods once per experience, never twice.

Register III — Seal

BONE PAPER ◆ CRESTS ◆ WAX ◆ BLACKLETTER

From the heritage crests, the wax seals, Mentality and the etched Saint Abel dagger. Paper, ink and red wax. This is the register of the record: packaging inserts, the Codex, certificates of the Sworn.

WE TAKE

  • Engraving and woodcut as the only illustration language
  • Chrome as relief, not as gradient decoration
  • Tiny technical text in the four corners
  • A beast in motion as the mark, cut as a woodblock
  • Red used like a wound: rare, total, unmissable

WE LEAVE

  • Fantasy-game kitsch: dragons, runes, glowing swords
  • Distressed "vintage" texture as decoration
  • Lions and stags (the category is full of them)
  • Clean vector mascots and cartoon animals
  • Gold. Steel is our only precious metal
  • Fraktur capitals. Nobody can read them
  • Anything that looks like a barbershop
II

Essence

What we are, when everything else is stripped away.

THE BIG IDEA

Sworn,
not sold.

VIGIL does not sell razors. It admits men to an order. The product is steel; the brand is the ritual around it. Every touchpoint asks the customer to commit rather than to consume.

Purpose
Turn the one thing every man does every morning, half-asleep, into a rite again.
The Enemy
The Cartridge Kings. Plastic heads, five blades of nothing, vibrating handles, subscriptions that rent a man his own face.
Promise
A single blade. An oath. For life.
Archetype
The Warrior, with an Outlaw's contempt for the market and a Ruler's sense of ceremony.
The Sworn
Men, 24–45. They lift, read, build, fix. They treat the morning as training. They are tired of being marketed to, so we don't.
Positioning
For men who want their daily rituals to mean something, VIGIL is the knightly order of shaving. Its steel is built to outlive you, sold only to those who swear for it.
Austere

Nothing extra. If a word, line or colour isn't load-bearing, it goes.

Commanding

We speak in imperatives. We do not ask how your day is going.

Ceremonial

Numbered, sealed, sworn. Small acts are given weight.

Unbowed

We break every sales rule, out of conviction rather than for the stunt.

Grim-witted

Dark, dry humour. A wry knight, never a clown.

III

The Name

One word. Five letters. Always lowercase.

VIG · IL  /ˈvɪdʒ.ɪl/  NOUN

  1. A period of keeping awake during the hours normally spent asleep, to keep watch or pray.
  2. Hist. The night a squire spent alone and armed in the chapel before his knighting. Before it, he was bathed, and his face was shaved.

WHY IT WORKS

The shave was literally part of the ceremony that made a knight. The name hides the product's origin story inside an ordinary English word. Once you know it, every morning becomes "the vigil".

WHY LOWERCASE

Fraktur capitals are beautiful and illegible. Set in capitals, VIGIL reads as "Bigil". In lowercase fraktur it reads instantly. So the wordmark is vigil, lowercase, forever. It also sounds quieter, like a word whispered in a chapel at 3 a.m.

IN RUNNING TEXT

In running text, write VIGIL in capitals (a plain-text convention, not a logotype). Never "Vigil Razors", never "the Vigil brand". Never pluralise or possessive-ise it in headlines. The order is VIGIL. Its members are the Sworn.

IV

Mythology

The story we tell. The mark that keeps it.

Before a squire became a knight, he was taken to the bath. He was washed, and his face was shaved clean, the boy taken off him with a blade. Then he was left in a cold chapel with his sword laid on the altar. He knelt there, alone, armed and awake, until dawn.

They called it the vigil. In the morning came the accolade: the flat of a sword on each shoulder, and a new name.

The blade came before the sword. It still does. VIGIL exists to make every morning that night: a few minutes of steel, silence and nerve before the day comes for you.

THE EMBLEM — THE WINGED HOUND

In heraldry the hound is the emblem of vigilance and loyalty: the animal that keeps watch while its master sleeps. Ours does not sit by the fire. It is cut like a 15th-century woodblock, black ink with white carving, and caught mid-leap.

  1. The Leap Full stretch, all four feet off the ground. VIGIL never stands still.
  2. Facing right Always forward, always into the page. Never flipped.
  3. Blade wings Swept back like drawn swords. It carries the oath at speed.
  4. The war collar Iron spikes, from the collar of the alaunt, the medieval war-dog.
  5. The snarl Open jaws, bared fangs. It does not bark twice.
  6. White-line cut Solid black mass with carved white detail. Reads at 20 px, rewards at 2 metres.
V

The Mark

One emblem, one helm, one word, one seal.

The HoundPrimary emblem. The winged war-hound, white-line woodcut. Always facing right, always leaping.
Wordmarkvigil in lowercase fraktur, cut as vector from UnifrakturMaguntia. Never retyped, never capitalised.
Stacked lockup
Stacked LockupHound, wordmark, descriptor. The poster lockup: covers, the tin, merch.
VIGIL seal
The SealSigillum Ordinis Vigiliae, the seal of the Order. Gules wax only. It closes, certifies and swears.
Horizontal lockup
Horizontal LockupHound and wordmark, x-height locked to the hound's body line. Navigation, footers, email.
Favicon
The vFraktur v on gules. Favicon, app icon, the end-cap of the handle. Below 48 px the hound becomes the v.

CLEAR SPACE

Keep a margin of one head (the height of the hound's head, collar included) on every side. Nothing enters it, not even the four-corner labels.

MINIMUM SIZE

Hound48 px / 14 mm wide
Wordmark64 px / 16 mm wide
Seal56 px / 16 mm
The v16 px / 5 mm

Below 48 px the carving closes up into a blot. Switch to the fraktur v.

PERMITTED FILLS

Single tincture, always. Chrome is the one exception, and only as true relief (embossed tin, engraved steel, rendered metal), never as a flat gradient.

THE LAW OF GULES

Red is a wound. In the Steel register it appears only as a thin signal: an index tick, a rule, one word. In the Blood register it floods the whole field. Never in between. Never a red button on a black page "for conversion".

CONTRAST

Argent on Sable runs 16:1, so use it for all body text. Gules on Sable runs 4.2:1, so only for display sizes of 24 px and up. Sable on Gules runs 4.4:1: use display or bold mono only.

NO GOLD

Every heritage brand reaches for gold. We don't. Steel is the only precious metal in the Order. Brass and copper may appear only as real materials, never as printed colour.

VII

The Three Voices

One for the seal, one for the chronicle, one for the armourer.

I — THE PROCLAMATION  ·  NOTO SERIF DISPLAY, CONDENSED

There is a night
before every war.

The blade came before the sword.

The ILCAPO voice: tall, compressed, high-contrast Didone capitals stacked with tight leading (0.86). Headlines, posters, packaging. At normal width and in sentence case it also carries prose. Italic is for whispers only.

II — THE SEAL  ·  UNIFRAKTUR MAGUNTIA

no quarter

Fraktur, the Mentality and Creatura voice, used in lowercase only. Capitals are banned: they can't be read. For the wordmark, setting names, a member's name and single words. Never more than three words.

III — THE ARMOURER  ·  JETBRAINS MONO

120 MM ◆ 50 MM HEAD ◆ 8 SETTINGS
0.20 – 0.76 MM ◆ ORDER 0347

The technical voice from the PRAY and Saint Abel posters. Field labels, specs and data. Uppercase, tracking +14%, never below 12 px, and only where a label does a job. No decorative labels in corners.

The Tongue

How the Order speaks.

I

Command. Don't persuade.

Imperatives over invitations. "Swear the oath." Not "Why not join us?"

II

Short. Then shorter.

Write it, then cut it in half. Full stops are weapons. Exclamation marks are banned.

III

Admit the blood.

Tell the truth competitors hide: it will cut you, once. Honesty is the flex.

IV

Old words, modern spine.

Oath, quarter, relic, ransom, sworn. Never "thee", never "thou", never fake Olde English.

V

Never beg.

No urgency, no scarcity theatre, no discount. We'd rather lose the sale.

NUMBERS ANYONE CAN READ

Settings, quantities, steps, prices and years are Arabic numerals. The dial is engraved 1–8, so the site and the packaging match it. Roman numerals survive only as ornament on chapter openers, never for anything a customer has to count.

◆

THE LOZENGE

Our only bullet and separator. Taken from the pommel and the blackletter tittle. Never a dot, never a pipe, never an arrow.

Who goes there?First name◆

LEGEND IN THE PICTURE, PLAIN IN THE WORDS

Headlines, woodcuts, seals and the drawbridge carry the legend. Everything people click, fill in or need to understand is plain English: Cart, Add to cart, Checkout, Shipping, Total, labelled form fields. Never write "one blade" (it is a Philips trademark); say "a single blade".

WOODCUT ONLY

Every illustration is a white-line woodcut: solid black mass, carved white detail, beasts in motion. No flat vector icons, no cartoons, no stock photos of foam beards.

THE PLATES — THE WOODCUT LIBRARY

I ◆ THE VIGIL
II ◆ THE GAUNTLETS
III ◆ THE SCABBARD
IV ◆ FIELD DRESSING

Every illustration is cut in the hound's hand: solid black ink, carved white line, one object or one figure, nothing in the background. They're printed on bone stock and pinned to the page at a slight angle, like proofs on a workshop wall. The product itself is never drawn. It is only ever shown as true steel.

the gouge

Our only pattern, taken from the hound itself: the carving marks of the woodblock. Tapered white-line cuts laid at 30°, the shaving angle. They grow long where the ink is light and vanish where it is dark. One cut in forty may be gules. It is printed inside the tin, on tissue paper and behind quiet sections. It never goes on the steel.

X

Motion

Steel has weight. Nothing bounces.

THE STROKE

cubic-bezier(.75, 0, .18, 1) · 900–1400 ms

Slow intent, then a decisive cut, then stillness, like a blade drawn across the skin. The default for every entrance and transition.

THE SETTLE

cubic-bezier(.16, 1, .3, 1) · 600–900 ms

For things coming to rest: text lines, cards, the dial. A heavy object finding its place. No overshoot, ever.

THE CUT

VIGIL
diagonal at 30° · the blade angle

Reveals split along the shaving angle. The page doesn't fade in. It is cut open.

EMBERS

gules → candle · rising · flickering

The vigil is kept by candlelight. Slow rising embers are our only ambient particle. Never sparkles, never confetti.

The Doctrine of Refusal

We break every sales rule. On purpose. Forever.

  1. I

    No subscription.

A blade costs fourteen cents. Anyone billing you monthly for that is not your friend.

  2. II

    No plastic.

Nothing in the box will outlive the steel. Nothing ends up in the sea.

  3. III

    No discounts. Ever.

Not on Black Friday. Not on your birthday. Not if you ask nicely.

  4. IV

    No comfort claims.

It's a blade. Respect it or bleed. Usually both, at first.

  5. V

    No second sale.

Buy it once. If we did our job, we never sell you another razor.

  6. VI

    No testimonials.

We publish no praise. Your jaw is the only review that counts.

  7. VII

    No oath, no blade.

Checkout is an oath. You swear, or you leave.

COMMERCE LAWS

The buy button is never above the fold. The site says "don't buy this" before it says the price. Every owner is numbered in order of oath. We email four times a year, at most. There are no pop-ups, no countdown timers and no "people are looking at this now". If a tactic would work on a tired man at 1 a.m., we don't use it.
